Now we find out that since its beginning, the National Organic Standards Board (of the USDA) has allowed two different antibiotic drugs to be used in the organic program on apples and pears. You see, fireblight can be a problem for many apples and pears. I have had it in my pear trees. They look as if they have been burned. If not stopped, blight can kill blossoms, limbs and eventually the whole tree. These antibiotics, streptomycin and tetracycline, are commonly used in treatment of human pathogens. Now we are seeing that overuse of antibiotics is causing resistance. The plan is to phase out the use of the antibiotics by late 2014. Meanwhile, I think you should know just what you are consuming.
